Tweenies Focus Letter

17th August 2010

Dear Parents

Our current focus “Ourselves” is due to finish. The group have loved looking in the mirror at themselves, pointing to their various body parts, painting with skin coloured paints and especially moving their bodies in different ways to music! We feel that the children have gained a lot and enjoyed this focus.

Following the children’s enjoyment of Seaside Day and their interest in sand and water activities, we have decided to base our next focus on “The Seaside”.

Listed below are the six areas of Learning and development and activities we will be doing at Nursery to fulfil these areas. These activities can also be done at home.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development

Please could you bring in photographs of a holiday your child has recently been on. We will be looking at these as a group and talking about them.

Communication, Language & Literacy

Using the items from the holiday role play, we will be naming the things that we would pack in a suitcase for our holiday such as hat, sun cream, sunglasses etc.

Problem Solving, Reasoning & Numeracy

Filling buckets with sand using spades and making sandcastles. We will take the opportunity to use mathematical language such as empty, full when filling the buckets etc.

Knowledge & Understanding of the World

Set up a beach role play area using sand, water, people, boats, shells, etc.

Physical Development

We will encourage the children to play in the sand pit and the paddling pool using different tools for pouring, scooping, digging, etc and using words to explain the different actions and textures.

Creative Development

Allow the group to experiment with mixing sand and water together.

Talk with the children about what different colours we see at the seaside.

Set up a beach role play area.

Decorate sea side pictures using sand and other materials.

Please can you make sure that your child’s Learning Journey is given back to their key person within one week of receiving it. If you do not wish to comment on your child’s Learning Journey, please could you sign and date the parents comment box.

Also may we remind you to fill in “WOW” vouchers to help build up your child’s Learning Journey. “WOW” vouchers are located on the Tweenies notice board. “WOW” vouchers are used to recognise the achievement your child has gained at home.

Our Staff Reward Scheme is up and running again. It is your chance to ensure that the staff are recognised for their efforts. You may nominate any member of staff, not just those in your child’s base room. Nomination sips are located on the Tweenies notice board and throughout the Nursery.

Please can I remind Parents that it is Carnival Day on Tuesday 24th August. You may dress your child in brightly coloured clothes and dresses, sequins, feathers, glitter and sparkle! Please could you bring in an empty plastic bottle with a lid if your child is in on that day so that we can make shakers to dance with to Carnival music. We will also be sampling some Caribbean Carnival food and making masks.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to ask.

Kind Regards

Sarah Tessier (coordinator), Sammy Rodgers (key person) & Sarah Barnes (key person)

August main nursery newsletter

15th August 2010.

Dear Parents

Just to update you on some staffing changes which are coming up very soon.

·         Dalarj will be taking her maternity leave with effect from 1st October. Congratulations go to Ellena who has been promoted to Coordinator of Preschool and will be replacing Dalraj with effect from 1st September. There has been some slight changes to the key person groups as Dalraj’s key group will be distributed between the remaining staff members. However it is anticipated that only Dalraj’s group will need to change and if you have had a change you will have an attachment to this letter to indicate the new key person.

·         Alison Gupta has been employed as part time Nursery Nurse and will work in all groups however it is anticipated that she will work mainly in preschool. Alison was with us as a student and she has completed her NVQ 3 with ourselves over the last year. She already knows all the children and has been working as a relief over the last few months.

·         George has been working during the summer months as a relief. The children have really enjoyed having him around in preschool. George is off to university in October but may be used on relief in the future. It is really good having a male role model around for the children - the boys have particularly enjoyed playing football with him!

·         Lauren has replaced Jackii in Toddler group as key person.

·         Amy joined us this week as a trainee nursery nurse. She has had experience of working in a school in Tenerife and will be doing her NVQ 3 qualification whilst being a full time member of staff. She is working at present in Toddler group but will move around the nursery once her mentoring period is complete.

·         Jemma, Toddler Coordinator, has been promoted to Senior Nursery Nurse on a temporary basis to cover Dalraj’s maternity leave. She will be opening up and closing down the nursery as and when required and be trained to take payments and sort out any issues you may have with regard to invoicing and changing days etc. The senior’s role is to be in charge until the manager or Assistant Manager comes on duty.

·         Helen returns as Manager/ Early Years Professional on 31st August. She will initially work 2 full days per week until December and then from January she will work 4 days per week. Claire will continue to provide office cover as the Assistant Manager.

·         Elisheh’s contract has come to an end - she was covering Helen’s maternity leave.

Please don’t forget that we our celebrating Notting Hill Carnival Day on Tuesday 24th August. Please see the poster in the hall for the list of activities the children will be taking part in on the day. Please dress the children in bright fancy costumes or sparkly, glittery clothes on the day. We are looking forward to eating Caribbean food on the day and having a Conga line parade around the nursery to Soca. Calypso and reggae music. The children will be making masks to wear throughout the day.

Dates for your diary for September/October and November.......

·         Tuesday 28th September - Parents Evening for 1-3 years.

·         Wednesday 13th October - Parents Evening for preschool.

·         Wednesday 20th October - gathering of items for Harvest Festival to take to local churches. On this day we will be discussing this celebration of the harvest. It will be an opportunity to discuss the seasons, healthy foods and how we can help the needy.

Please note that there will be no Government Funding for preschool children during October ½ term which is from 25th - 29th October.

·         Tuesday 9th November - Diwali Day at nursery

·         Friday 19th November - Children in Need - details of the theme of this event are to follow.

New Resources

I am very happy to inform you that the nursery took delivery this month of 41 boxes on one day! We have had a lot of new equipment which many of you will have seen in Tweenies group in the form of new ‘me do it’ chairs which they are able to move around themselves - it has been so hilarious to watch the Tweenies group organising their own sitting area!. However there are other items such as the new hideaway cube in Toddlers, the preschool dividing role play area, the four large wooden sit on trucks, a large creative trolley on wheels which all rooms will be able to access throughout the day for their various creative play, and two new water/sand troughs for Tweenies and Baby unit.

Software System

The nursery is upgrading to a new type of software package to assist us with daily numbers/ invoicing/ rotas and staff deployment etc. We are hoping that it will be much easier for us to invoice and give you much quicker decisions with regard to spaces and changes of days/sessions within the nursery. It should be a great help to us once we have inputted all the information.

August has been a very busy month. We have had a group of 6 school children in each day in our After School Club and September is normally a very eventful month at nursery! Many of our preschool children will be starting school with some joining our breakfast/after school club for the first time. We also have many new children starting with us. It is an exciting time where we say goodbye to the children who have been with us for their early years of development and say hello to our new friends.

Kind regards

Andrea Roe

Managing Director.

Toddler Focus Letter

Dear Parents

During our last focus ‘Colours’ our children really enjoyed reading Elmer, the patchwork elephant and making their own pictures of Elmer. The children have taken great excitement in our fishing activity, where they were able to catch their own coloured fish and talk about the colours.

On seaside day, the children loved the activities which were set up outdoors, with the paddling pool and our ships and sail display. They also enjoyed our creative area, making seaside pictures using sand and paints.

We have decided to do ‘water play’ as our next focus for the next 6 weeks as we have found that the children have shown a lot of interest in this area.

We will be covering the following;-

Personal, Social and Emotional

·         Discuss the difference in warm and cold water through exploring using their bodies.

·         We will discuss bath time and the importance of hand washing and hygiene.

Communication Language and Literacy

·         Singing water songs e.g. Jack and Jill and its raining, it’s pouring, Incey Wincey Spider etc.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

·         Discuss safety aspects in relation to water: rivers, canals, the sea, and the local swimming pool.

·         Talk about the weather and clouds.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

·         Water play, using different sized containers to pour water from – using language such as full, empty. We will also use different components in order to make the water play interesting such as food colouring and how certain colours mix to make other colours and how we can make bubbles.

·         We will also discuss whether resources sink or float.

Physical Development

·         Indoor water play, in the paddling pool and outside play in the rain. I am sure we will have some puddles to splash around in during the start of Autumn.

Creative Development

·         Raindrop pictures.

Suggestions for Home

Having fun at bathtime and introducing sieves and jugs to the bath to help develop their water play.

Our next event day on the 24th August 2010 will be Carnival Day. We will be dressing up in brightly coloured clothes and listening to soca music and calypso sounds. The children will be eating Caribbean foods for dinner and exploring exotic foods throughout the day.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Lauren as a key worker in Toddler group. She has taken over Jackii’s key children. Lauren has already worked in Toddler group last year and her experience to the team will be invaluable.

We would be grateful if learning journeys could please be brought back each month to ensure that all monthly journals can be added. Learning journeys are an important part of your child’s learning and it is essential that they are kept up to date at all times and left on the premises in case Ofsted should arrive.

Kind Regards

Jemma Burge - (Toddlers co-ordinator)

Toddler Focus Letter

Dear Parents

During our last focus ‘Opposites’ the children have enjoyed talking about big and small and relating this to our bodies. We have extended this activity by marking each child on a height chart together with a photograph of each child in toddlers. The children have enjoyed looking at their photo and how tall they are in relation to their peers.

For our next focus we have decided to concentrate on colours as we have recognised a development need in the group. Whilst some children know some colours they struggle with lesser known colours such as pink/purple/turquoise. We are also finding that when asked a second time, they quite often have forgotten.

We will be doing the following activities to cover the six areas of learning and development over the next 6 week.

Personal, Social and Emotional

·         Choosing their colour preference e.g. what colour cup, plate, bowl they want.

Communication Language and Literacy

·         Talking about their favourite colour.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

·         Looking at the colours of traffic lights.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

·         Going on a ‘colour hunt’ in the garden. Look at the different coloured flowers in the sensory garden. Discuss the colours in the sensory room and how we can change the colours of the tubes, walls and fibre optic curtain by means of interacting.

Physical Development

·         Ball and ring games based on colours.

Creative Development

·         Hand and foot prints in a range of colours.

Suggestions For Home

You could talk about the different coloured cars on the way home? Look at the colours on the world cup flags?

World Cup Day was very exciting and all the children made such an effort. They all loved painting their own England flag white and red. The children really enjoyed making and decorating cookies with the England flag on.

The next event day will be Seaside Day on 20th July 2010. Outdoors will be transformed into a beach. To add to the enjoyment, please send your child to nursery with a towel, swimming costume/trunks, sunglasses, hat etc. We will almost pretend that we are going on a trip to the seaside – eating fish and chips for lunch – outdoors if it is fine, and having choc ice for lunch as a treat! The children will be making ice lollies.

As the summer season is upon us please could you bring in some sun cream and a sunhat clearly labelled with your child’s name for us to keep at nursery if possible.

Kind Regards
